La Sapienza

Founded in 1303 by Pope Boniface VIII, La Sapienza (Sapienza Università di Roma) is not only the oldest university in Rome but also the largest in Europe. With more than 125,000 students and a vibrant academic community of over 3,600 academics, it merges centuries of tradition with cutting-edge research and teaching. The main campus, located in the heart of Rome, is a “city within the city” and a meeting place for students and teachers from all over the world.

Sapienza plays a central role in Italian and international academic life. It consistently ranks among the top universities worldwide, holding leading positions in international rankings such as QS (2nd in Italy, 132nd globally) and ARWU (1st in Italy, top 150 worldwide).

Sapienza is equally dedicated to supporting students’ professional development. Through initiatives such as the Career Service, Employability Lab, and training in transversal, work-oriented, and entrepreneurial skills, the university equips students with the competences needed to thrive in today’s labour market. Participation in these programmes is free of charge, and students can also earn Open Badges by engaging in more than ten hours of activities.

Sapienza international

Sapienza University of Rome is strongly committed to internationalisation and offers a wide range of opportunities for students and staff to engage globally. The university facilitates joint research projects and regularly hosts visiting professors and researchers from leading international institutions. It maintains partnerships with both European and non-European universities to support mobility programmes for students, academics, and staff, while actively participating in numerous EU initiatives for development cooperation. Incoming students can benefit from free Italian language courses, designed to foster integration into academic and social life, and are welcomed each year during International Student Welcome Week, which provides practical guidance, cultural orientation, and a chance to connect with the Erasmus Student Network.
